Hurricane Season predictions
Here at Texas Cruise Company, we like for our clients to be well informed. Too often we hear on the news about some disaster or impending disaster and come to find out it did not really pertain to us.
In this day of instant communication we find out about things like hurricanes and oil spills just moments after they happen.
Hurricane season for the Gulf of Mexico and the western Atlantic starts June 1 and lasts through Nov. 30. We here at Texas Cruise Company keep up with such things.
Just the prediction of hurricanes does not make them come true, so take the predictions – from the weatherman – with a grain of salt. That’s what they are….just predictions.
NOAA forecasts have about a 50-50 chance of being correct. They have been accurate in five out of the 10 years in this decade, according to a USA TODAY analysis. The agency’s prediction was too low in four years, and too high in one year (2006).
NOAA’s forecast predicts as many as 23 named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season, with three to seven becoming serious enough to be classified as major hurricanes. Named storms come with top winds of 39 mph or higher.
The agency worries that as many as 14 could turn into hurricanes, with winds in excess of 74 mph, and three to seven could be Category 3, 4 or 5 storms with winds of at least 111 mph.
Last year they predicted one to three could be the bigger hurricanes, category 3, 4, or 5.
“If this outlook holds true, this season could be one of the more active on record,” said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “The greater likelihood of storms brings an increased risk of a landfall. In short, we urge everyone to be prepared.”
