Texas Cruise Key Lime adventure

On one our cruises which we call a Texas Cruise, we cruised out of Galveston, Texas and visited the port of Key West, Florida.  Now Key West has turned into one of our favorite cruise vacation cities and a big reason is because we were introduced to their fabulous key lime pie.

Let me tell you our latest key lime pie story.  It was well into the evening when Ramona called me upstairs to come help her a minute.  She said she needed me to squeeze some limes.  Turns out the minute was well over an hour Key Lime Piespent squeezing two large bags of key limes.  She only cooks with the very freshest ingredients, so I was not surprised….what surprised me was the sheer amount of key limes she expected me to squeeze.  But, I ‘cowboyed up’ as they say here in Texas and got busy.  An hour later, I was just about squeezed out when I found the last key lime.

Even my fingers were puckered.

It was the next day that the prize came.  She had made the most fabulous key lime pie I ever tasted.  After our visits to Key West, we always considered ourselves key lime pie connoisseurs and commented on various key lime pies and if they measured up to those we had in the Keys of Florida and Key West in particular.

We love our Texas Cruises out of Galveston and all the places they take us, but the stop at Key West is just one of our all time favorites.  You can book a Cruise with….Texas Cruise Company and visit the port of Key West, Florida yourself.  This particular cruise is one of the itineraries on the Carnival Conquest on a cruise out of Galveston.  Give us a call at 1-325-835-7561 and we’ll tell you all the details on how to sail to Key West as part of a Texas Cruise out of Galveston.

More About Key lime Pie:

Key lime pie is the signature food of Florida, particularly key west.  There seems to be a Key lime pie for every palate .

Even though key lime aficionados argue endlessly about preparing a proper key lime pie and the fillings involved, the authentic filling is a light yellow one due to the egg yolks used.

Key lime pies are made from the key lime fruit which are a tad smaller than a regular lime.  The seeds of these fruit managed to travel all the way from south Asia(Malaysia) to Florida keys with the Spanish and it was assimilated there as a semi-native plant.

The making of the key lime pie has some breath taking history behind it.

No one really knows when the first key lime pie was made, but most of those who have heard the story claim that it was Aunty Sally (may not be the real name) who worked for rich Bill (his real name was William curry ) and it was Aunty Sally who created the first key lime pie in the 1800’s. Some historians think that she did not make the key lime pie all by herself, but that she just was able to perfect a delicacy that was a  creation of the area fishermen.

There was no written official recipe for key lime pie until 1930s.  It was only during the 1930s that the overseas highway was opened for transport which allowed the tank trucks to bring in ice to the city.  Until then people relied on the canned sweetened condensed milk, which was invented by Gail Borden.

Now, with widespread availability of the needed ingredients, key lime pie has spread beyond the Keys to the delight of the world.
